Physinews: Panic has gripped residents of Koluama community in Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa state as sea robbers have taken over the waterways in the area.

Sahara Reporters writes that residents have called on the Nigerian government to intensify security efforts in the area in order to check the activities of the sea pirates.

It quoted a former militant leader, Reuben Wilson, also known as General Pastor Reuben, as saying that the attacks have become unbearable and the people are worried that it may lead to bloody confrontations between angry youths of affected communities and the sea pirate gangs.

“Five boat engines are stolen daily by these pirates and they have stopped fishermen from work out of fear of being attacked and killed,” Reuben said in a statement he issued on Thursday, October 6.

He added that “ traditional rulers have abandoned their roles of deliberating over the affairs of their people for fear be robbed, kidnapped, or killed along the waterways by the sea pirates.”
