Physinews: At least eight people have died and 30 others
were injured after a suspension bridge
collapsed off the coast of Bali, officials have
said.

The Yellow Bridge, which links the
Indonesian islands of Nusa Lembongan and
Nusa Ceningan, collapsed at 6.30pm local
time.

Police spokesperson Arendra Wahyudi said
there were too many people passing over the
bridge for a religious ceremony when it gave
way.

He added that the water beneath the bridge
was less than two meters deep, but many of
the victims were crushed by debris.

A spokesman for the National Disaster
Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho,
said three children between the ages of three
and nine were among those who died.

Two of those injured were in a serious
condition, while the others suffered minor
injuries.

Initial reports indicate the victims were all
Indonesian.
Mr Nugroho said: "Before the bridge
collapsed it was already shaking.

"Some motorcyclists and people fell into the
sea, and people in the area immediately tried
to save them."

The bridge, which is around 100 metres long
and 1.5 metres wide, is used only by
pedestrians and motorcyclists.
